No Degree of Separation

Romans 8:38-39; Jeremiah 31:2

A popular theory today is called “Six Degrees of Separation,” which claims that a person can be connected to any other person in six steps or less. Yet when we look at God’s love for us, there is no degree of separation. Every person who ever lived is directly connected to God’s love (John 3:16), but that love is extremely personal for Christians.

“For I am persuaded”(Romans 8:38-39, NKJV)—convinced, certain, positive, confident, have no doubt—that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love.

“Neither death nor life”—not the greatest joys in life, the death of a dream, a relationship, or a dearly loved one, not even our own death. Nothing that happens in life from the beginning to the very end can separate us from God’s love.

“Nor angels nor principalities nor powers”—no laws, no government, no persecution; no temptation, tool or attack of Satan, or anything he can bring into our lives. There is no power on earth strong enough and no other being in the universe who can separate us from God’s love.

“Nor things present nor things to come”—nothing we have done in the past or can do in the future, nothing that lies ahead and is unknown to us, no trial or anything we can fear or worry about. Nothing in all of time can separate us from God’s love because His love is outside of time.

“Nor height nor depth”—we cannot go high enough to the farthest galaxy in our universe or low enough to the lowest depth to be separated from His love. God is everywhere and because He is love, His love is everywhere. We cannot be out of His presence or away from His love.

“Nor any other created thing”—no disappointment, defeat, discouragement, depression; no unkind words or deeds, no rejection of man; no disease or physical pain, no fear or trial; no sin; no unbelief or doubt, or even denial of God’s love. Nothing we have experienced, nothing we can even begin to imagine, nothing in all of creation “shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

God’s essence is love, so that He cannot help but love His creation—you and me. His love is everlasting (Jeremiah 31:3), eternal, forevermore, unending—and it cannot be stopped!
